Thursday 25th, Friday 26th and Saturday 27th July 2019
This unique course is designed to explore theoretical and experiential aspects of voice work, to extend both the knowledge and practical skills of voice practitioners.
Christina Shewell has worked for many years as speech and language therapist specialised in voice, theatre voice teacher, university lecturer, coach in the business world, and in many other areas of communication training. Her book, ‘Voice Work: Art and Science in Changing Voices’ (2009) is internationally used by singing teachers, spoken voice coaches and those working with voice problems.
Dates and Fees
In this course, she uses a multi-disciplinary approach, drawing together evidence-based research and varied approaches to working with voice. This blends art and science into a programme for singing teachers, voice trainers and speech and language therapists, providing a ‘meeting point’ for those who work across these diverse fields.
The Voice Skills Model lies at the heart of Christina’s theoretical and practical approach, with its eight aspects - Body, Breath, Channel, Phonation, Resonance, Pitch, Loudness and Articulation. This highly accessible format is ideal for voice practitioners to analyse the vocal functioning of students and clients and provides a ‘way in’ to choices of approaches and exercises relevant for individuals or groups.
The challenges and rewards of work with changing voices along the continuum of normal to abnormal voice use will be examined and discussed. Whenever possible, theoretical ideas will be explored in practical work on your own voice, and in discussion of relevant work with clients/students. Practical work will include technical, imaginative, and textual techniques, with relevant findings from neuroscience to link imagery and mindfulness to brain, body and voice,
‘Christina is such fun to work with. She has a real balance between the theoretical and practical. She doesn’t shy away from rigorous content, but she seems to instinctively know when to vary the learning.’
‘I didn’t think I would get to dance, laugh AND learn so much.’
‘Working with Christina is a must for anyone serious about working with spoken voice’
