This interactive two day course is designed to give an insight into the work of Kristin Linklater with certified practitioner Deborah Garvey.
Dates and Fees
Deborah Garvey is a voice practitioner who teaches both spoken voice, accent work and singing. This multi-faceted approach is informed by her early training as an actor and singer and subsequent study to complete a music degree at Goldsmiths College in 1994. Alongside performance work in West End, repertory, and radio, she went on to gain experience as a singing coach at Goldsmith’s College, the BRIT School and London School of Musical Theatre. She graduated from MA Voice Studies at Central School of Speech and Drama where she is now a lecturer on the MA/MFA programme. She also teaches group singing and accent coaching on BA Acting (CDT), practical voice on MA Music Theatre and provides vocal support on student productions at Central. Outside the conservatoire training setting, she is an associate coach for Speak Easily Ltd, a leading provider in communication skills and accent softening courses.
This two day interactive course is ideal for anyone wishing to gain an insight into the work of Kristin Linklater and is relevant to both spoken voice and singing practitioners.
An introduction will include:
A practical exploration of the work will follow through the vocal progression that is documented in Linklater’s ‘Freeing the Natural Voice’ (2006). The function of these exercises is to ‘free, develop and strengthen the voice as a human instrument’ with the objective of producing ‘a voice that is in direct contact with emotional impulses, shaped by the intellect but not inhibited by it’ (2006: 7-8). The progression is as follows:
Please wear loose clothing. The work includes adapted yoga positions, floor and standing work, arm swings and other physical activities. These can all be adjusted to individual needs.
